First-Time Glassblowers: Our Zen Studio Adventure

Writer's picture: klingconnectionklingconnection

📍ST. PETERSBURG, FL - Glassblowing, is a novel technique, created in the middle of the first century BC, and involves blowing molten glass into a bubble. That bubble can then be shaped, formed and defined into a multitude of different things like vases, lamps, ornaments, art, etc.

Sean and I grew up in Bucks County, PA, where colonial glassblowing was very common. During field trips as kids, it was normal for us to see blacksmiths, candlemakers, and glassblowers in and around our historic hometown. But we never thought we'd get the chance to try it ourselves!

Discover Zen Glass Studio in St. Petersburg, FL! I was SO excited to see that Zen Glass Studio had a workshop to learn about glassblowing, do it ourselves, AND come away with our own first design glass ornaments. Zen studio was affordable, homey and comfortable, and the gaffers (another name for glassblower) were all EXTREMELY knowledgeable and helpful. We could not recommend them enough!

If you've never tried glassblowing and want the details, here ya go:

  1. Wear comfortable clothes. You'll be moving a lot and getting up and down, so be mindful of tight clothing.

  2. Take off jewelry like rings and bracelets. The "pit" (where the glass melts) is RIDICULOUSLY HOT 🥵 . Silver, gold and metal are good conductors of heat and will start to burn your skin quickly if too close.

  3. Bring your lungs. Blowing the molten glass into a bubble is HARD! Ask your instructor to use the surgical tube if you're having trouble.

  4. HAVE FUN! The best thing about glassblowing is that the final design is ALL YOURS!
